All MoticEasyScan models accommodate standard coverslipped microscope slides with dimensions of 76 ± 1 mm x 26 ± 1 mm. All MoticEasyScan models can accommodate larger slides (i.e. 76 x 51mm slides) for bigger tissue samples, except the MoticEasyScan One. Thickness: The scanners are built to handle standard slide thicknesses, with advanced features like Extended Depth of Field (EDF) and Z-stacking available to accommodate even the thickest samples and ensure sharp focus throughout the specimen.

The scanners are optimised for digital pathology and can image various biological and medical samples prepared on glass slides, although other very different sample types are also compatible – continue reading for more information.  Common applications and samples include; histological specimens (standard hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained slides), and immunohistochemistry (IHC).  The scanners are specifically designed for the accurate interpretation and quantification of IHC staining patterns.  In addition, cytology sections, including samples from fine needle aspirations (FNA) and general cytology preparations.  Frozen sections work well and are often used in "live mode" (FS-Live software) for rapid telepathology and immediate diagnosis.  Bone marrow can also be imaged. Where fluorescence is concerned, the MoticFlexScan models are available for scanning both brightfield and fluorescence (e.g. DAPI, FITC, TRITC) samples. They are perfect for low plex IF, H&E and FISH scans.  While all of the above are common applications, at Micro SlideScan UK we have also found all models to be very capable when it comes to samples such as thin sections of plants, geological thin sections (although note no polariser and analyser), insects and many other types of sample.  With regards to imaging types, only bright field and fluorescence imaging is supported.  Other transmitted light techniques such as phase contrast, DIC and modulation contrast are not possible, although it should be pointed out these techniques are rarely used for the above sample types. In summary, the Motic EasyScan scanners are versatile and flexible, and can image a wide array of prepared glass slides common in clinical pathology, research and education.

The objectives are Plan S-Apochromatic (10x) and Plan Apochromatic (20x and 40x) CCIS® objectives.  Numerical apertures are 0.3 for the 10x and 0.75 for the 20x and 40x. Image resolution is 0.26μm/pixel at 40X.  Resolution, contrast, colour fidelity and sharpness are all exceptional.

All models use a novel three camera system, where one camera is solely used for focussing, another for the overview (including the slide label) and a third high resolution camera for imaging.  Advanced algorithms take information gleaned from a rapid initial pre-scan to map a plan of focus.  Image stitching and focussing are seamless.  In the event of encountering trickier sample types, including samples where the slide preparation is sub standard, certain parameters can be fine tuned in order to maximise performance.

No, the scanner can run unassisted.   For the higher volume Infinity scanners for example, most users run it once overnight, and then are able to process an additional run during the subsequent workday.  For the single or double slide versions, set up the scan, go and make a cup of coffee, and when you come back it will be done!

The trays that come with MoticEasyScan NEW Infinity are barcoded and can be read by the near-field communication (NFC) sensor on the front of the slide scanner. This system allows the scanner to track where all the glass slides are located during a scanning run, and also allows you to retrieve and review your slides’ imagery without even having to click your mouse. This ease of use factor enables labs to process high volumes efficiently with minimal intervention.

If you primarily use IHC or special stains, or have an entire batch of unique slides with similar properties, you can create a custom scan profile to aid in the scanning process.

Often, a single slide or maybe even a batch of slides comes into the lab with the highest urgency. All Motic models with capacity for more than 6 slides include loading bays designed to allow you to queue emergency batches to the front of the line, without pausing or stopping current scan. This is in contrast to many big box scanners, who claim continuous loading, but force the user to pause or cancel a scanning run when emergency slides are introduced, hampering productivity

Yes, additional warranty beyond the standard two years is available, including a premium package which includes replacement of the unit while repairs are made, in the instance of a failure.

All systems are supplied with the EasyScanner software for control of the scanner and image capture.  In addition, the DSAssistant software (see the more product info page) is also supplied with all systems.

Motic's FS-Live Telepathology System enables real time live imaging for live remote diagnosis/consultations.  It is typically used with frozen sections (hence FS), during intraoperative consultations but doesn’t have to be.
